So what now, when to start looking elsewhere?
just started at a mega fund that tends to push its associates out after 2 years. don’t really want to do business school. probably not going to get promoted (probably nobody in my class tbh). when do I start looking for my next job? Spring of my second associate year? Who are the main headhunters I should use if I want to stay in PE but more in a MM position? What are some good growth/VC headhunters (also interested in early stage investing)? Thanks in advance - oncycle recruiting has messed with my head on working a job where I have the next job locked down already…
Ended up going to business school but this is what I did below.
Started soft networking with alumni / ex-colleagues after a year at your MF so you have concrete work experience to talk about. Many times they won't have any available spots but lateral opportunities can open up within that 12 month time frame you're looking for.
Around 9 months before my 'end' date I had convos with head hunters. During my time market was very...very slow (2023) and tbh still is. If the market is anything like I experienced you'll probably get 2-3 inbounds from each HH so a total of ~15ish opportunities of which 4-5 will fit you.
I typically was only interested in PE so the typical HH worked well (CPI, HSP, etc.) but for VC/GE (especially with VC) thats all network.
