Sr As / VP Market
Hey guys — is the brutal lateral market that everyone talks about referring to pre-mbas looking to lateral out of their first associate stint, or is it also including MBAs? Also, for MBAs that did the traditional 2+2+2, do they always recruit for a VP title or sometimes do they have to start as sr associate?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the "brutal lateral market" often refers to both pre-MBAs and MBAs, but the challenges can differ depending on the candidate's background and timing. Here's a breakdown:
Pre-MBAs Looking to Lateral:
MBAs (Traditional 2+2+2 Path):
The lateral market for both groups is competitive, and success often depends on networking, timing, and the candidate's perceived value to the hiring firm.

I can speak for the MBA market - at H/S, and not uncommon to go for a Asc/SAsc role after b school, even if they don’t advertise it publicly (eg say “Investor” on LinkedIn). True VP roles at comparable funds are quite hard to come by with only 2 years of PE.
How is PE recruiting going this year at H/S? Are people going back to their prior firms, changing geographies or even pivoting investment strategies?
