Staying on their radar

Little back story: over the last 1-2 months I had/have been interviewing with my number one firm. I had gone through 3-5 phone conversations and ultimately got told "hang tight, we will get back to you in a week or two to put something more formal together." Well the two weeks eclipsed recently, but I didn't get the response I had expected; quite honestly, the reverse. While I was very well liked [and would have been invited], given the ebb & flow they didn't think the timing was appropriate. Next steps: stay in touch, you are at the top of the list, etc. In full disclosure, throughout this process they made it clear there was no rush or immediate demand.

Obviously I am bummed. This was for a role I thought I could be hugely successful in -- PE + operational duties.

Looking for some advice as to how I should approach the situation. I would really love to find a way back into their grace or at the very least make damn sure I am at the top of the list. Ideas for follow-ups?

Thanks
