Switch Offices

hi all - I recently wrapped up my first year at a MM PE fund in city a. Have gotten good feedback and nod for 3rd year (tho no official offer). My fund is flexible and all of my sector group sits in city a. I’ve enjoyed my time here and would love to stay for VP only if they let me move to city B (where we have another reasonably sized office). Any advice on how to bring this up? No real ties to either city I just strongly prefer city b for lifestyle reasons

Would you leave if they didn't let you stay? Most firms want sector groups to sit together, and an ASO doesn't have the same leverage someone more senior does to move offices and be the only person from your team in that office. You're basically going remote at that point.

If you'd leave anyway, doesn't hurt. Otherwise I would get the offer and then bring this up later in a "just asking" type of way.

I would also say you want to move for family reasons even if it isn't true (yeah my parents live in XYZ city I've already mentioned I'm from, but I have a lot of extended family in city B) as it's a more compelling reason than just wanting to live there for no real reason

I would add that moving to city B if your team is in city A will hurt your career, no matter how you package your motivations behind the move. If you’re set on your current job, try to embrace city A. If you’re set on city B, find another job asap. If you don’t, know that you are most likely accepting a lower career trajectory - which could also be fine depending on your personal ambitions / lifestyle choices.
