Switching PE firm (and hopefully being promoted to associate)

I recently made the jump after ~3 years in big4 audit then FDD to an analyst at a LMM PE shop in a small city. After working in the role for a while it seems the firm doesnt have a great track record of promoting analyst in the time frame that the MD who hired me discussed. When can I switch firms in hopes for a direct promotion to associate? Im open to switch cities to somewhere with a larger PE scene but not sure if this would make my next jump even more difficult
