The Desire of PE based on Comp

Why is PE so desired? I get that there is the upside of carry as opposed to IB (no carry), but that usually doesn't come through until years down the line when you're already in the latter part of your career. Also, hours/lifestyle seem to be comparable to IB from associate to VP/Principal.
