Thoughts on CDD / Strategy role at MM PE firm?

Hello WSO – wanted to post on this thread to get some insights into a potential job I'm interviewing for next week.

For context, I have about ~ 3.5 years experience in strategy consulting, working for a boutique generalist firm that focuses on market diligence and strategy work for LMM private equity firms and their portco's.

The firm I'm interviewing with has their own portfolio group and has in-house commercial diligence and strategy professionals. Responsibilities seem quite similar to my current role however would be working for a well-regarded MM private equity group and would be working directly with deal team members on CDD and management teams with value creation initiatives.

What are exit opportunities from a role like this? The obvious one is b school, but is it impossible to leverage experience like this into an investment team role or are you pigeonholed on the operations side? This firm hires strategy consultants for both ops and investment team. Also, would associate level comp for a role like this differ from a traditional PE associate role? First interview is with their head of recruiting – wonder if it makes sense to plant the seed that I'm also interested in investment team roles?

Curious to hear general thoughts on this as the role seems unique.
