Thoughts on Permira?

There doesn't seem to be much info on Permira here. Any thoughts on culture, deal flow, senior members, reputation, comp for the American office (either NY or Menlo)? I know they have a strong presence in Europe and have done some interesting deals there, but am curious about what people have heard of their American teams.

Have a couple buddies there at pre-MBA level. Lifestyle is sweatshop/banking 2.0. Working very late every night, every weekend, no vacations, etc. Comp is spectacular. Perks are also spectacular. Think traveling to Europe/Asia multiple times a year, constant cross country travel, etc. Generally, my two friends are happy there and doing high profile, sexy deals.

How does Permira compare to other MF/UMM firms?

Compare with regards to what? Deal size, comps, culture, work-life balance, career path? They compete with the BX, KKR, CD&R, Carlyle, CVC, EQT, PAI Partners, Warburg Pincus, etc. for all the UMM deals. They will probably not do Dell take private (or only in a consortium) but they have pretty broad capabilities. In terms of comps, they are lower than the street (at least in Europe), pre-carry, but you start getting carry from Associate so it should make it up in the long term. On a career perspective, you get in as Investment Professional (in Europe at least) and this can go on for a while (e.g. 4 / 5 years). Work-life balance depends on team and deal flow. I have a friend who got crashed for 1.5 years as he did 3 deals but now that they are enough invested he is just doing portfolio work and leaving for dinner every day (for the last year or so).

I'm grateful that I have two middle fingers, I only wish I had more.
