Tips on networking for on-cycle

Hey guys,

I've been trying to network for PE on-cycle but haven't had great luck with response rates. Any tips on what I should do different compared to banking emails? Should they be a bit longer? Attach resume? Should I also reach out to principals or even higher?

For context, I'm a first year analyst recruiting on-cycle for 2027. No longer in school but am part of the 2027 class because I graduated in the fall instead of the spring.

Any advice is appreciated - thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable tips to improve your networking for PE on-cycle recruiting:

  1. Keep Emails Short and Direct

    • Your emails should be concise, ideally no more than 5-8 sentences. Avoid lengthy introductions or unnecessary details. Get straight to the point about why you're reaching out.
  2. Attach Your Resume

    • Attaching your resume is highly recommended. Many professionals auto-delete emails without a resume attached. Ensure your resume is polished and can back up your interest and qualifications.
  3. Target the Right People

    • While reaching out to associates and VPs is common, don't hesitate to contact principals or even higher-level professionals. They might have more influence in the hiring process and could provide valuable insights.
  4. Follow Up Strategically

    • Don't be afraid to follow up if you don't get a response. Analysts and associates are often busy, and a polite follow-up can increase your chances of getting noticed.
  5. Be Flexible with Availability

    • When suggesting times for a call or meeting, mention that you're flexible and happy to accommodate their schedule. This makes it easier for them to respond.
  6. Personalize Your Outreach

    • Tailor your emails to the individual you're contacting. Mention something specific about their background, deals they've worked on, or the firm to show genuine interest.
  7. Leverage Multiple Channels

    • In addition to cold emails, consider using LinkedIn or attending industry events to connect with professionals. Tools like Hunter.io can help you find email addresses if needed.
  8. Focus on Building Relationships

    • Networking isn't just about landing an interview. Aim to build genuine relationships by showing interest in their career path and seeking advice.
  9. Timing Matters

    • On-cycle recruiting can be fast-paced. Start networking early and stay consistent to ensure you're on the radar when opportunities arise.
  10. Practice Your Pitch

    • Be prepared to articulate your story, why you're interested in PE, and how your experience aligns with the role. This will help you make a strong impression during conversations.

By implementing these strategies, you can improve your response rates and build meaningful connections in the PE space. Good luck!

Should've added more context, I'm recruiting on-cycle for 2027 and I'm no longer in college. Started early because I graduated early.
