TPG Business Development
Today I received a headhunter inbound for an associate opportunity with “TPG Business Development” and I’m curious if this is part of the PE platform or if this is a back office role at the firm? The email description states that an associate will perform “in depth diligence and underwriting for investments ranging minority through full buyout acquisitions” (paraphrased). This is seemingly the team that acquired Angelo Gordon so is this a private credit role?
I articulated to the headhunters that I was only interested in PE, not PC and just wondering if anyone can share any insights on this group. Particularly in terms of reputation, comp, culture, exits, and even if legitimacy of if PE role? Thanks in advance.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the description provided in the email suggests that the role involves "in-depth diligence and underwriting for investments ranging from minority to full buyout acquisitions." This aligns more closely with responsibilities typically found in a private equity (PE) role rather than a back-office position. However, the mention of Angelo Gordon, which is known for private credit, raises the possibility that this could be related to private credit (PC) rather than traditional PE.
To clarify: 1. Reputation and Legitimacy: TPG is a highly reputable firm, and any role within their business development or investment teams is likely to be legitimate and well-regarded. However, the specific nature of the role (PE vs. PC) should be confirmed directly with the headhunter or during the interview process.
Compensation and Culture: TPG is known for competitive compensation packages, especially for front-office roles. The culture can vary by team, but generally, TPG is considered a prestigious and demanding environment.
Exits: If the role is indeed within PE, it could provide strong exit opportunities to other PE firms, portfolio companies, or strategic finance roles. If it is a private credit role, exits might lean more towards credit-focused funds or roles.
Next Steps: Since you are specifically interested in PE, it’s essential to confirm with the headhunter whether this role is part of TPG’s PE platform or if it is tied to their private credit operations. Ask for clarity on the team’s focus and how it fits within TPG’s broader structure.
Networking with current or former employees of TPG could also provide additional insights into the role and its alignment with your career goals.
