Transitioning from asset management to PE?

I was wondering if anyone could give advice on how to make the transition from asset management to PE. I am about to graduate from grad school and have secured a solid position at a large bank for an asset management/equity research role. While I am pleased with the position my real interest is in PE and I have intern experience with a good firm in my area but they were not hiring as they are relatively small. Has anyone made the transition from AM to PE and how difficult was it/what led to your offer? What skills can I use as leverage into a PE interview if I plan to stay at my current job for around 1 year?
