Trying On-Cycle with No Deal Experience?

Recruited into IB for a FT role after coming from an ER role last summer. I still have yet to start at my bank, so I have no deal experience to my name.

That said, is there a way to positively spin this when speaking with firms/HHs, or would it be best to gain deal experience and try off-cycle or next year's process? Would not having deals be a make-or-break factor or could I get around this by excelling in other areas for interviews?

Mod alert: We have announced a PE Interview boot camp for July 21, 2023. Check it out here: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/courses/live-training/private-equity-interview-bootcamp. Happy recruiting!

Mod alert 2: The Bootcamp is sold out. If you couldn't get a seat, please check out our PE interview Course. Good luck with the interviews!

I mean it’s inevitable that you’ll get asked about deal experience but you could spin it to talk about your ER work and say that you’ll have the chance to engage in modeling in your new role.

If you feel prepped then go for it and see how it goes. I think your path is less traditional so not many people will have too many insights for you unfortunately. Good luck

With on cycle this early, everyone will be in the same boat. Some have even yet to start training. So there’s certainly no reason to feel disadvantaged.

Demonstrate your knowledge of markets, current events and sectors where applicable. In your case, I would talk about some of the companies you covered in ER.
