Rounded up 3.7 from target studying finance b/c I slacked off senior year, I am going to a public MF (BX,KKR,TPG,Apollo, etc.) next year as an Aso1. It's a HH screening game; if you are at a top bank and/or group with a 3.7+ you will get most interviews for MFs/UMM's. From there, it's up to you to convert. I am sure there are people that got interviews from every MF, many ended up with no offer. There are similarily people who got interviews from only 1 MF and ended up with an offer.

FYI, the best PE investing seats for the longer-run are growing UMM/MM firms, but those are hard to find and you are effecitvely trying to solve for what that looks like 4 years out (2 years till you join + 2 years as associate), which led me to a MF to protect downside risk. Nobody has a good chance of going from associate to partner at these public MF's, but the MF pedigree means you are likely to have optionality to go do other investing roles (sure, maybe not at the most desireable seats espeically in PE, but probably can get a decent seat) or go into operating roles.

You are fine. Also UVA is more of a target. I was at a non-ivy target and candidly a lot of these targets and semi-targets are perceived to be similar academically by all the ranking sites and people. I don't think anyone is gonna think a NYU 3.7 is better than a Vandy 3.7 espeically since Vandy is the higher ranked overall school. As long as you went to a top 10 LAC and/or top 30 research uni you are fine, below that I do not know.
