Could be anything from

- true nepo process and it just sucks for you

- or the kid didn't really have a connection but was impressive and the "same hometown" just sealed it for the MD

- or (IMO most likely) they decided not to hire someone FT near-term given the market environment and the freshman hire is unrelated to you / not a "long-term" hire like you would be, since he's years behind you

These types of things will happen throughout your career and the best advice is really just not to spend any mental energy on it. Even experienced people right now are getting ghosted in final rounds because firms are pausing hiring because of the market uncertainty.

Focus on being such a strong candidate they have to have you. The rest is truly just out of your control.

Their budget changed or they knew this guy out of the gate and needed to post the job and make it look competitive.

Applied to a company for an internship got no where via their portal. My brothers friend handed it off to the hiring manager, ‘was perfect candidate and I’d call him today if I could but it has to come from our systems.’ Same company, close to a year later and levered another family member and got my resume to the CFO. I got a call from the head of university recruiting the following morning. It was not an interview, but a ‘tell me what you’re interested in your resume looks great. We may not have an opening there but have options in another business areas though.’ Did nothing with the firm, other opportunities came up, but the world still works that way.

Good news though, every other internal connection job opportunity failed to materialize (had others). I’m still successful by working and applying for the jobs I wanted. There was rejection along the way. Don’t fret over a miss, aim and take the next shot.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.
