Updated views on Advent International

Inspired by a few other posts on here recently asking for updated views (e.g. Updated views on CD&R), wanted to see if any monkeys out there had updated views on Advent in terms of culture, comp, reputation, b-school placement, best sector team, etc. Particularly interested in the New York office.

Top tier fund across nearly every category. Kind of turning into a monster in terms of fund size imo (driven by some strong returns in last handful of funds iirc). Tend to fly under the radar for whatever reason but the people I personally know there are sharp dudes and they seem to really like it.

I’ve heard good things about their BFS, Industrials, and Consumer verticals and I think all of them have part of their team in NYC (someone who knows them better might correct me on this). From my buddies comp seems to be top end of market and like all Boston based funds they’ve historically had great placement into HBS (and like all PE funds this has waned somewhat in recent years but my buddy who returned as VP said that if you’re strong performer they’ll make a real effort to help you with b school stuff). This part is all anecdotal but from some guys I trust and know pretty well so I think fairly reliable.

Also their associate program is like a 2+1 thing where you spend two years as an associate and then most ppl are invited to stay on for third year as a senior associate. I think for some ppl this is a plus and others not so much but sounds like it’s pretty optional so probably doesn’t hurt unless you’re hoping to get promoted super fast (which doesn’t really happen at large PE firms anymore anyways).

Have also heard better culture-wise than other MFs but tbh idk how true this is vs it just being something ppl say about all the firms that hire some consultants.

Overall imo it’s likely not some magical unicorn or whatever that some people make it out to be with all the “MF with awesome culture” comments but it’s very clearly in the category of funds that if you get an offer for you’re definitely taking it.
