VP appreciation thread

Wanted to make a thread about the best VPs you've worked with and show some appreciation to those that are doing a great job.

I'll start with my 2 favorite, one from my current favorite VP to work for, and the other was from my time at Bain (was technically a Senior Manager but same idea)

Current VP:

  • Always willing to jump in and teach me things that I need to learn, and explain concepts that I don't quite get

  • Focused on sustainability rather than face time--if we're done at 12pm on Friday, then the week is done

  • Takes time to think through work and the implications of the work, both in terms of how much it changes our answer and the amount of time it will take to get things done

  • Absolutely unafraid to voice unpopular opinions/disagree with partners if he believes that other paths ought to be taken, but also willing to be 100% behind decisions that he previously disagreed with

  • Mentors not only on the job info, but also life advice in general

  • Loves a good Dad joke

Bain SM:

  • Had a family and understood that that was most important thing, so main priority was balance

  • High expectations and high praise/satisfaction with good work

  • Had a great mindset on failing--hadn't made promotion his first time around, but stuck with it, and said "Bain has highs and lows, but those don't determine who you are--I stay leveled because I know I'm created in the image of God, and what could ground me more than that?"

  • Willing to be a personal mentor as well as a career mentor

Anyways, would love to hear some appreciation for your VPs! Would also love to hear from the Partner/ Principal perspective on what you think of your rockstar VPs.

Maybe the most wholesome post on this website. I certainly hope you told your VP some variation of this.

I had two Analysts that played a similar role for me during an extended 6 month IBD internship. God I was awful, I made every stereotypical intern mistake possible. But I improved. and at an exponential rate. By the end I knew all the short cuts, efficient ways to build things out, had an above average understanding of DCFs, how to pull comps, etc. At the beginning I was a big use the mouse guy, could barely describe a DCF at a high level, and I pulled comps just based on marginal business model overlap.

The nice thing about starting at the bottom is there is only one direction to move in so long as you truly strive for improvement.

Shout out to everyone who takes a step back and actually tries to mentor their team.

Take this with a grain of salt because on I only did a SA stint at a BB in NYC but the VP was tremendously helpful for me as an intern and really helped me learn the bigger picture aspects of the business. Was always respectful towards Analysts and Associates as well. Great guy that I would definitely have enjoyed working with if I didn’t end up in trading.

Guys I’d be so down to mentor but I feel like my associates don’t actually love investing. They are just here to clip a paycheck. Their first question is how can we do this quickly? Homie… how can we do this well? Or they ask will we keep looking at deals? I have plans to go to the gym at 630?What do I do

Very wholesome content, not only great to hear about your mentors but also your appreciation. Hope you all have a blessed week ahead :)
