What you learn in PE

Hey all,

Have searched but not finding great info. Would love thoughts on:

  1. the top things you’ve learnt (soft skills + hard skills) from a few years in PE? Preferably MMPE where you have a portco and deal role.

  2. How these skills help you outside of PE if you were to shift to corporate operational roles?

I’m considering the shift from consulting. Don’t think I’d want to be in a fund for the long term (probably rather ops) but love the investor mindset and think there might be some valuable skills to learn. Trying to get as many data points as I can on whether it’s useful endeavour.

Thanks

Would echo the above.  The only real "skills" you hone are deal making (really M&A process management) and mainly pattern recognition.  You get to learn about a ton of different businesses but likely won't have the same operational skillset as the consultant who's spent their career in XYZ niche.

Have definitely come across a few ops-focused funds that allow associates to transition into portco roles, but you'll probably still be a deal guy.

Thanks both, really helpful! When you have a moment, would you mind jotting down the top few things you’re a) spending the most time on in PE b) learning as a result over a few years?

Specifically, how much time are you spending on research for others to look at/modelling versus critically thinking about biz models as an associate?

I have a solid interest in investing too but can see myself pursuing that as a hobby (equities, property, potentially tiny companies) throughout my life.
