Who to give as a reference when lateraling PE firms?
I'm working on a lateral move to another PE firm (with my current firm's blessing) and was asked to provide a reference from my current firm. Does it matter what this person's rank is? The VP I work with most could provide the best/most detailed feedback but would a partner (even if they don't know me as well) carry more weight? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
You could provide both and give the context that you work most directly with the VP?
FWIW, I was in the same situation and did not bother to provide a partner reference. I gave a VP/Principal level reference for the reasons you pointed out.
