Why this indifference/discrimination against post-MBA associates for Buyside Recruitment?
Something that has been bothering me is as I have become more & more active on this platform & Buyside in general, why does it seem that exit opps just seems to drop by 80-90% if you are coming as post-MBA?
Like pre-MBA IB analyst/MBB ->Buyside is well established but somehow Post-MBA IB associate ->Buyside is impossible but why's that?
I get argument that "Too senior for junior roles & too inexperienced for senior role" but what if someone is ready to accept pay-cut & junior roles just for a career in PE? And I am saying this as someone who already has a MF (BX/Warburg) PE associate experience but in a different country so it's automatically discounted in US PE recruiting. Post-MBA-> BB/EB IB is only way to build some experience in US & then try to land in PE shops.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the challenges faced by post-MBA associates in buyside recruitment stem from several key factors:
Mismatch in Experience Level:
Post-MBA associates are often seen as being in a "no man's land" of experience. They are:
Preference for Pre-MBA Analysts:
PE firms have a well-established pipeline of hiring pre-MBA IB analysts or MBB consultants. These candidates are trained in the technical and analytical skills needed for PE and are seen as a better fit for associate roles. Post-MBA associates, on the other hand, are often viewed as less moldable and more expensive.
Opportunity Cost of the MBA:
The MBA route is increasingly seen as less valuable for buyside recruiting. Many PE firms no longer require an MBA for advancement, and the opportunity cost of leaving a $200k+ job to pursue an MBA can be significant. Additionally, the prestige of an MBA as a differentiator has diminished over time.
Limited Value Add Without Prior PE Experience:
Even with an MBA, candidates without prior PE experience struggle to demonstrate their value to PE firms. Anecdotal evidence suggests that even candidates from top MBA programs like Wharton have faced difficulties breaking into post-MBA PE roles without prior experience.
Market Saturation and Competition:
The buyside is highly competitive, with a surplus of highly qualified candidates vying for limited roles. PE firms often prioritize candidates with direct PE experience or those who fit seamlessly into their existing hiring pipelines.
Geographic Discounting:
In your specific case, prior PE experience in a different country may be discounted in the U.S. market. PE firms often prefer candidates with local market knowledge and networks, which can put international candidates at a disadvantage.
While taking a pay cut and accepting a junior role might seem like a logical solution, PE firms are generally reluctant to hire overqualified candidates for junior roles due to concerns about long-term fit and retention. However, there are alternative paths to consider: - Targeting Consulting-Heavy PE Funds: Some funds with a consulting focus may be more open to candidates with diverse backgrounds. - Networking Aggressively: Building relationships with PE professionals and leveraging your MBA network can help uncover hidden opportunities. - Exploring Mid-Market or Growth Equity Firms: These firms may have more flexible hiring criteria compared to large-cap PE shops.
Ultimately, breaking into post-MBA PE roles is challenging but not impossible. It requires a strategic approach, persistence, and a willingness to explore alternative paths.

PE is the most elitist industry out there with a deep obsession over pedigree. If you didn’t go to an ivy+ school in undergrad and did some elite finance gig afterwards, no way you’ll find your way into a MF in the US.
I have MF (Blackstone/Warburg/Carlyle) experience but it's in Mumbai, India hence I discounted it. Was hoping how would post-MBA sprint looks like (H/W->IB -> UMM/MM PE), I am not even looking at MF in US.
Thanks for reply.
