Work at lower-mm firm but working on mega fund size deal
I work at a lower-mm PE firm, leaving for b-school in August. I'm looking to move up market and know that's tough to do especially to mega fund if you haven't already worked there or comparable firm. However, one of our larger investors is working on an acquisition that we're helping him out with, and it's a $1+ billion buyout. I ran the model and put together the presentation that's being used in the preliminary talks with debt/equity partners, and we'll see how far down the pipe I get before I have to leave, but regardless this is pretty solid experience.
How much traction could I get by listing this deal on my resume to show that I've worked on a transaction the size that larger buyout firms are doing? Would this help in trying to move up market post-MBA or for the MBA summer internships? FWIW one of the equity partners we've met with is just under mega fund status in terms of AUM.
I'm asking how much it can help, not whether it would hurt...
Definitely list it and get closer to and stay in touch with the equity guys you've pitched the deal to. If you start doing the deal with the co-investors at a big fund, interact with them as much as possible and impress them, go out for drinks, etc. I'm far more likely to hire someone or put them in touch with my contacts (and act as a reference) when I've been in the trenches with them.
