Work feels like prison

Associate in PE... every Monday when I go to work, I feel like I'm going to prison....more specifically, an intellectual prison where I have to think, act exactly like the people around me or else I draw ire.

Anyone else feels that way? (job title on this post is throwaway)

Yes. It's why I left PE. Small companies develop distinct cultures. If you don't blend well with that culture then you're going to feel this way.

Ultimately I decided I liked being part of large banks as opposed to small PE shops. Less of an overpowering sense of hivemind and more of a "get your work done and we don't care who you are" mentality.

I feel most top bucket analysts crave for attentions and wanted that "Care". How was your performance and did you mind if the bank doesn't give a crap about your mental health at all?

Just to clarify, I am referring to my post-IB, post-PE years. I am not in banking anymore, but work in a strategic function at the same BB at which I did M&A.

I was ranked top 3 both my banking years. If you go into it with the mentality that you're there for 2 years and you're there for a purpose that exists outside of being in banking, then how you're treated during those two years doesn't really matter, in my view. It's going to be a nightmare - the more you care about it the more miserable you're going to be. Cynicism is the only way to survive.
