Work place "orphan" - has anyone experienced this and how did you improve your situation?

Hi guys:

Long story short, I'm in a bit of a "professional orphan" situation where in my not-so-large team, I can't find a sponsor who will help me gain development opportunities. Much of it was not from my doing (higher level politics, other incentives at play).

For those of you who've worked for a few years, have you experienced such situations before? If you take it as granted that, in my current environment, I won't be able to find a sponsor / mentor - what can I do to make my situation better? (For a variety of reasons, I can't change jobs in the next 1 -2 years). How do these situations usually change and improve?

Thanks
