AM -> Acquisitions @ Associate level
Hi all, have a question for the community as I would like to know people’s thoughts on this.
I just finished my first year as a Senior Analyst at a life co doing equity AM. Prior I spent two years as a brokerage analyst.
I have been really enjoying my job, but would like to transition to acquisitions at some point. I most likely have another year as an analyst in my current role, after which I would be an associate in AM.
Curious to here thoughts if after I make associate in my current role it would be possible to lateral to an associate acquisitions role?
At my shop AM handles all capital events post acquisition, so I am very comfortable with building models, writing memos for IC, and the due diligence process for refis/crystallizations/dispos/etc., but I do know that acq is a whole different beast.
Bump
Most people I've seen drop a level so you'd start sr analyst in acquisitions but curious to hear
Yeah, thats what I was thinking unfortunately. Maybe would be an easier switch if it was to a GP? I know a lot of smaller GPs have associates/analysts do both AM and acq.
I'm at a regional dev shop with some acq but we do more of a "finance" approach. So our finance department will do acq and AM and as far as I know, we aren't the only shop that handles it this way. You would probably have an easier time to keep the title if you went to dev rather than REPE.
Everyone’s comfortable until you have an MD breathing down your neck asking you where the Memo draft is to review before IC. Lots of sprints over here.
I mean yeah, I understand that. I was more wondering from a skill set standpoint and if an associate lateral would be possible.
Haven’t seen it personally. Every AM person (Associate and below) who switched over started as an analyst.
I'd think you could come in at Senior Analyst, or for shops that don't have a formal senior title as effectively a third year analyst (i.e. one year to promotion). Unlikely to make a perfect lateral to Associate though. Maybe at a leaner GP but not REPE.
