Anyone have success leaving RE for finance?

I work at a JLL/CBRE on a debt/investment sales team and realized I don’t have a huge passion for real estate. I’d enjoy it on the side but not enough to build an entire career on.

I’m far more interested in businesses and could see that being a far better fit for me.

Has anyone here made the switch before?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for professionals to transition from real estate (RE) to other areas of finance. The skills acquired in RE, such as financial analysis, deal structuring, and client management, can be quite transferable to other finance roles. Here are some steps and considerations for making the switch:

  1. Identify Your Target Role: Determine what area of finance you're interested in. Whether it's investment banking, private equity, asset management, or another field, understanding the specific sector will help tailor your approach.

  2. Networking: Leverage your current network and reach out to professionals in the area of finance you're interested in. Informational interviews can provide insights into the transition and help you make valuable connections.

  3. Skill Development: If you're lacking certain skills or knowledge for your target role, consider taking relevant courses or certifications. For example, financial modeling courses or an understanding of different industries can be beneficial.

  4. Craft Your Story: Be prepared to explain why you're making the switch. Highlight how your RE experience is relevant and how it can add value to a role in a different area of finance.

  5. Update Your Resume: Tailor your resume to emphasize the skills and experiences that are most relevant to your desired role in finance.

  6. Consider an MBA or Other Advanced Degree: Sometimes, an advanced degree like an MBA can help bridge the gap between different areas of finance and provide a strong network for career opportunities.

  7. Be Persistent and Flexible: The transition might not happen overnight, and you may need to be open to stepping stones that get you closer to your ultimate goal.

Remember, many have successfully made this transition before, and with the right strategy and persistence, you can too. If you're looking for more personalized advice, consider reaching out to mentors or career coaches who specialize in finance careers.
