Are there any articles, podcast episodes, interviews, etc. you'd recommend people interested in RE look at?
I know we've had similar threads for books (and frankly I'm sure we've had similar threads related to exactly what I'm asking), but while I was looking at various real estate youtube videos/podcasts/articles/anything a lot of what came up was trashy or just came off like an infomercial (to put it lightly). Is there anything you'd recommend reading/watching/listening to that actually contains good advice from people who know what they're talking about? People not actively trying to sell your something? Luminaries of the industry who rarely discuss their strategies or insights who somehow, somewhere have actually done so every now and then?
Have probably plugged these on other threads but: Sam Zell's autobiography is very good - he reads the audio version and it's great if you have commute; ULI podcast (called leading voices) has some really fantastic interviews - Gerald Hines, Sam Zell, Ron Terwilliger - would highly recommend. Will post more if they come to mind - but start there
The Leading Voices interview with Jon Geanakos is phenomenal.
If you are looking to side hustle, bigger pockets podcast.
For Podcasts, checkout Behind the Bricks and Leading Voices in Real Estate. Both have really interesting guests and generally provide good insights into the realities of the industry. BtB is more spotty with the amount of podcasts they do, but they do have some really important players in the NYC market as guests. The other is around the same, just touches on owners outside of NYC, and longer more drawn out discussions on their history and paths to the top of the mountain if you will.
As far as books go, Other Peoples Money is my personal favorite. Really well informed, and has an absurd amount of information packed into it. Talks about one of the biggest flops in RE Finance, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. Addresses PE, Debt, Legal, and about everything else the industry has to offer, while carrying an impressive amount of historical accuracy.
YouTube channel called Investors Archive. They have a good bit from Jon Grey (idk if that's how you spell it I never f**king know), Sam Zell, Barry Sternlicht has a great interview at Miami. LeFrak has a couple (not necessarily a fan but I guess he's a big deal?). There are other RE guys on there as well. It also has great interviews with other investors outside of RE and their principles are all applicable.
Fifth Wall's podcast has some pretty interesting interview with their portfolio companies and LPs.
Big fan of the blog Financial Samurai covers more than just real estate, lots of good information to be found.
Bigger pockets is sadly the largest RE forum I'm aware of and you really really have to dig to find good information on there. Lots of people posting who have done a couple deals and have more advice than knowledge.
I agree with above- Other People's Money by Bagali is a great read.
Youtube: Investor Archive is great. They have tons and tons of hours of content. Almost all of the greats are there- Jon Gray, Sam Zell, Steve Wynn, Donald Bren, Richard LeFrak, Stephen Ross, Barry Sternlicht, and many others. Even great for learning about other areas of finance (Howard Marks, Ray Dalio, Lloyd Blankfein).
Urban Land Institute has some great stuff as well. The talks with John McNellis shed some color on development.
Website Articles: I read through everything I can on The Real Deal, Curbed, and Commercial Observer. I read up on Trepp too (lots of CMBS info). Urbanize LA is great if anyone happens to be in LA. Bisnow has some great stuff too.
Wharton Papers are also great and informational. Tons of great content there.
This article on Ethan Penner is such a good read too. Teaches you about real estate, capital markets, and life itself. He went through several "career breaking" failures that ended up being learning experiences for him.
Urban Land Institute has great publications. So does IREM (I know most people don't care for property management but it's an important function nonetheless).
Books: Photo is my books. Not complete though. I loaned out The Real Estate Game (best book to start out with by far), Chain of Blame (highly recommend), and my book on Gerald Hines. Have some other books in other random spots.
