Rotational Program: Exit Early or Continue?
I’m a recent grad who just started at an investment manager with a national presence. I’m in a rotational program and currently sit on the AM/IM team. It’s the leanest team in the firm and handles a mix of asset management, fund management, and portfolio management. So far, my work has been mainly focused on AM, with limited exposure to the IM side, and I’m not sure how much IM exposure I would get moving forward.
My manager recently brought up the possibility of me joining the team permanently and leaving the rotational program early, even though this is only my first rotation. I really like the work and get along well with the team, so it’s definitely something I’m considering. My main concern is that I’d miss out on rotating through teams like acquisitions and development. Staying in the program would give me broader exposure and the chance to see which areas of the business I enjoy most before specializing.
Would love to hear from anyone who has faced a similar situation or has thoughts on which option would be better from a learning and experience perspective.
Bump. In a similar situation
Did a 2 year stint in a rotational program, loved one rotation and strongly disliked other. Main problem is you don’t really get great at either role, and by the time you normally would you’ll have to rotate off. If I had another gig at a different firm lined up with the discipline I want to do, I’d strongly have considered leaving early. Also depends on the firms rotational program IMO. Has it been around for a bit / how are the exits for those who have left? If solid, would consider possibly sticking it out
