Background check - Urgent Dismissal Question!

Hi Monkeys, I am currently a Junior that attended a semi-target on the West Coast. I recruited last spring and finished with a 2024 SA offer at a BB in SF.

Unfortunately, in the beginning of last semester my friend and I got jumped outside of a frat party by a larger group (4-5 students). We attempted to defend ourselves - a bunch of kids took videos and the school ended up finding out about the incident. I was one of only 3 kids identified from those videos. Myself and another student were sanctioned suspensions and another was expelled. No police report was made.

I recognize I screwed up big time by putting myself in that situation, but the school did not handle this case fairly at all - the whole process is a kangaroo court. I haven’t reached out to HR yet, I am not sure what to do. I am currently enrolled at my local state school (still on track to graduate in Dec 2024 - scheduled to graduate a semester early due to APs).

Has anyone had a similar experience? The suspension will not show up on my official transcripts.

Will background checks ask for a disciplinary report as well?

Is there a chance I can let HR know that I decided to transfer?

How would this look for future recruiters out of school ?

I worked incredibly hard to break into the industry and I don’t want my future to pay for this one mistake I made. It feels like my career is crumbling before it even begins.

I truly appreciate any advice and guidance.

I briefly served on my university's judicial board and I agree that it is a kangaroo court.

I don't mean to be flippant here because I completely understand the anxiety, but I'm 99% sure you're fine. As you said, no police report, not on your transcript, etc.

I had my own adventures in college, even with an odd police report or two, and I have never even had to explain them, much less have them show up on some sort of background check.

You are fine. If a police report was not made then it will not be on your background check. Background checks only show up proof of enrollment (proving that you attended that school nothing more) and criminal record. You have no criminal record since you were not taken to jail with no police record.

If you want to be SAFE i would say buy a background check usually about $65 to see what comes up so you can start preparing for your next steps.

No need to stress now until you have done a background check so you don’t snitch on yourself when they would’ve never found out.
