Best Certifications

Hey all, college junior year currently in the process with multiple REPE and brokerages. I feel that I have developed my candidacy for these jobs pretty well over the last two years, but as I approach the workforce I have begun to wonder about developing myself not only to get the job but succeed at it. A question I bring up at the end of interviews is what would best prepare someone to add value day 1, or being more realistic within a few weeks or months, and I get the common answers of modeling courses. I was wondering what is the best modeling course for the price, but also are there any other niche skills or courses that an analyst could have today that would make them better at their job like an AI course or general market knowledge courses like bloomberg certs. All advice is greatly appreciated.

Do certificates for your own knowledge base, not your resume. Having a certificate from a random website in random skill is not going to make or break you getting hired or finding career success. That doesn't make them wastes of time, as knowledge is good for knowledge's sake, but they aren't things that are going to make you stand out.

The overwhelming majority of your extra efforts should be put into networking.

Beyond a baseline of technical competence (which isn't that high; this isn't rocket science and you're expected to learn a lot on the job), so much of hiring is fit, not knowledge.

Can you be trusted to double check your work before turning it in?

Will you try to problem solve on your own before asking? (Asking for help is totally fine, but at least give it a try first)

Are you capable of making a 10-point to-do list for the day and making sure you knock out all 10 items, not just 9.

If I take you for a beer or to lunch with an investor, and I have to use the restroom, can I trust that you won't hit the investor with the Gen Z stare or, alternatively, say something weird in the 2-3 minutes I'm gone?

Do you have an "ownership" attitude where you will take ownership of obscure tasks and see them to completion as if it's your own money at risk?

I can teach you to plug numbers into excel. These days, I'm sure some sort of AI can plug them in for you. I can't teach you to just have a sense that certain number is wrong and to have the initiative that a certain model is wrong.

I came up in development, so this might not apply to you, but I can't teach you how to beg and plead with the telecom company to get their team out there on time because 40 residents are planning on moving in in a week. I can't teach you to care enough that doors swing the right way in plan review so that they don't have to be fixed in the field or residents aren't annoyed and less likely to renew. I can't teach you to order pizza and beer for the guys at 5pm on a Friday and hand them each $200 from your own bank account (knowing the deal will reimburse you) so that they'll stay an extra two hours past "quittin' time" to finish a detail they're slow on because the fire inspector is coming out at 8am sharp to issue a TCO or not.

Think of a story of you in class, or in clubs, or in sports, or in internships, or in life, when you move heaven and hell to achieve the impossible. Think of a story where you do the dirty work, the blocking and tackling, knowing that other people will be the star. Those are the kind of things that stand out for me.

Best certification you could get is having a parent in the industry, hopefully have a family office that owns a good amount of real estate
