Breaking into institutional debt & equity brokerage

I'm curious to hear from those that have knowledge of breaking into the brokerage side of debt & equity at the institutional level from UG. From what I've heard, it seems to be that the lending side of brokerage is harder to break into than IS in terms of placement within the division at a good brokerage. I would assume that the best path to get into the institutional side would be to try and get into an analytical role with a prior understanding of the intricacies, assumptions, and skill-sets to even handle such a job as one would be working at the highest tier possible in such a position. Just a thought and curious as to what you guys think/know.
