Can I use something I did for another company as a writing sample if I take out all sensitive information?
I was asked to send a writing sample for a possible job. I have a really strong writing sample analyzing a deal, but it contains confidential information from another company. If I take all out all names and numbers, would it be fine legally/morally to use this as a writing sample?
As in all things it depends but at a high level if the sample can be anonymized I think it would be fine as long as the document in and of itself can't be linked to a particular company by purely existing.
Basically it just analyzes a pro forma of an actual deal that ultimately went through, and I just scrutinize some of the assumptions in the pro forma. I would take out all names, values (IRR, etc). Do you think this would come off poorly to the prospective employer?
Simply ask the prospective employer. "For the writing sample - is the expectation that is come from my current role? I do not have many real estate or finance based writings from university on file."
I have with company names blacklined.
