Others can chime in but I think your best shot is option #2 described above. Your CRE internship in project management is not that relevant to a the type of firms you eventually want to work for. Working for a major brokerage firm for ~2 years will be your best bet.

Just make sure you are working in the right "niche" for where you eventually want to be (meaning, don't do office leasing for JLL if you want to do multifamily acquisitions). I've said this before on this forum, but I think your best bet would be to work in debt placement for a well-known firm. You'll touch all product types, see lots of different deal structures, and have a good idea of what deals actually get done and why they get done.
