Certifications and courses to complete plus organizations to join

Currently a first year analyst at a large debt fund. Have seen a slowdown in activity and with new members joining my team, I will have a lot of free time on my hands.

Given this, I am not involved in ANY organization regarding Real Estate. I don’t follow any news outlets either as I am mostly always consumed by work. I want to change this.

I am based out of Chicago and would like to use my free time wisely with joining an org to network and learn or take certifications or courses to throw on the resume and just learn more.

Any reccomendations on what to pursue?

not sure about Chicago specifically, but check out ULI and/or NAIOP, they're both real estate orgs which chapters all over the country. In my market, ULI in particular is really active and I've met a lot of great friends and mentors in it across a variety of industries within CRE.

Check out Bisnow for CRE news, The Real Deal is decent too (there's a Chicago site), a couple others. If you can get an office subscription to Chicago's business journal, that would be great too.
