Construction management classes beneficial for development or just network more?
Looking to get your guys opinion on this. In the next few years I want to undertake a small development project on my own.
Would you recommend taking some construction management classes at the local college? Looking at old threads it says that the classes will help you get a handle on things, but not in depth enough to make a big difference on a development project.
I'm wondering if my time would be better spent in ULI, and networking with smaller developers to see how they got their start?
How would my time be best spend to get to the level of proficiency to start my own project?
Keep in mind I was a math/comp sci major so I don't have the finance background.
Thanks.
Eh maybe. The problem is, that with the technical aspect of development, the only way to really learn it is through doing it over and over again. I have over 10 years of construction experience and am still learning. New problems always come up on every project. If you want to do your own deal/development a few years down the line, I think your best bet to be in that position is by working at a shop where you can be exposed to it. Learn it by working for a company that does it.
