Did I make the right decision leaving job / Broker from Hell
Hey everyone, so I wanted to create a thread regarding my current situation. I have been working as an analyst at a well-known brokerage shop for the last 11 months and finally had the balls to give my 14 day notice last week. I decided brokerage wasn't the path for me and I have one broker I work for that was an absolute piece of shit to me everyday. From not returning my calls, to blaming team problems on me, to even calling me an 'idiot' on multiple occasions, he made my life hell. We got into another altercation where he shit on me on an email thread with 8 different people on it. He was upset over a sale comp set that was missing two properties that were far below the usual criteria given the vintage and average submarket sale prices. Usually this is a 1-minute fix to input those missing sales into the excel file, but he dragged it out and called me incompetent/slow and reported me to my line manager as 'turning in incomplete work.' I initially blamed myself for not including those properties, but realized from a purely analytical standpoint any analyst in my shoes wouldn't have included those assets. This happened multiple times before as he oversaw sale/rent comps and it seemed the criteria we wanted was never consistent. everyone in RE has figured out that brokers show rent and sale comps that are same year built/floor plan but with higher rents/sales. it isn't rocket science. However, it seemed this guy would yell at me to include shitty assets on these lists just to fuck with me. I know that sounds insane, but it really did seem like that's what he was doing.Anyways, I have 4 interviews lined up this week and feel pretty good about being able to land another gig on the principal side in the next month or two given how hot the job market is for analysts. I know it's dumb to quit before landing another job, but it seemed this guy was doing everything in his power to get rid of me, no one else seemed to care and there are so many open positions out there where I'd be a lot happier.. I just wanted to share this story and want to hear other peoples thoughts if I'm an idiot for leaving this job without another offer and if they've been in any similar situations..Thanks!
Not an idiot. You sound like a smart dude. No better time than the present to walk away from situations like that, job market is obv very strong for your kind of skill. Would’ve been better if you were able to stay while you searched but I think now is about as safe of a time to leave without a back up as there ever will be.
Smart move to leave a toxic environment with terrible management. But again, remember that the market is nuts and using BS comps is what gets a deal done....price to perfection game. More idiots have won than folks who think or use logic in their proforma. You either dance with the devil or the devil will crush you!! Take that to your next employer and you will sleep better at night. Sad to say, being rational doesn't get rewarded in this market. I hope you find a more suitable shop that appreciates your skill set than working with idiots who treat you like crap.
I see nothing wrong with exiting a shitty environment, and frankly, this is common at "top brokerage shops" (not all, but it happens more than it should...). Could or should you have "stuck it out" until a new job came? Eh... if you needed to, I think you would have. So, yeah... Not an idiot in my book! Good luck with the hunt, this might be the best time to do such a move in a long time!
Sounds like NYC Newmark team
I know that the wise choice is always wait until you have a job bf you leave your current. That being said, most people spend most of their waking time at work. Being in a toxic, dysfunctional environment is really not healthy at all and can have long term effects. I used to call it the shower test. The shower test is when you get up Monday morning and have sense of panic or dread when you are in the shower thinking of heading into work for the week then leave. I worked for a fund with an absolute toxic, angry and abusive boss. I used to have massive panic attacks starting Sunday night that would just fill me with dread. I would give advice to other people and not follow it myself. I took it for far too long and realized it effected all aspects of my life. I was either angry and mad at things that were little, or depressed and stressed and did not want to leave the house. It took me longer then I expected to find a new job, but man do I feel so much better. I really hope you find a company and more specifically a boss that appreciates you. Good luck and sorry for the rant, but this hit home.
Thanks for sharing man. Think a lot of people on here weigh comp & company image too heavily when really it is the people who you work with everyday that make or break the job (cliche/cheesy but so true). I’m thinking back to an interview for this role 11 months ago, this guy didn’t even acknowledge me when I introduced myself. Should’ve taken that into account before accepting my offer, but then again I was a naive recent grad who just wanted to gain experience and have a brand name on the resume (ik hypocritical to my above statement).
Couple of things, first of all the blame or red flags are not on you. When you are going to a firm, especially as a new hire where the field is massively competitive you have blinders on. You just want to get that job. There should be reasonable expectation that the work environment will not be toxic. Secondly, and this one might be harder for you to understand considering your age and being new to the work force, but dude shit does not change since you were in elementary school. Dont let the fancy house, wife, kids, title fool you. The culture in the work force is no different then on the playground. As a dad of young kids the shit that goes on in work is the same that goes on in their school. Your boss didnt like the change in the dynamics. Maybe you are better looking, funnier, or have the "it" that he noticed, but you do not know you have yet. Fk him and his jealous, childish behavior. I hope that you at least tell them in your exit interview that the culture was not a fit and by culture you mean a insecure, downward trending boss. Luckily you are light years ahead of me in terms of realizing your self worth. Good luck on your next role and dont be the victim in this, your boss in the wrong.
Great advice. I didn't have that reaction to the same degree, but I definitely felt the dread of work when I was in construction. Part of it was definitely the team I was on, it was all guys around my age, but I had nothing in common with them, there was literally nothing we could discuss, I ended up spending my lunches at my desk because it was better than trying to awkwardly force conversation for the twentieth time. The social isolation was pretty brutal, which eased up a bit on my next project, but not by much. Jumped ship as soon as I could, switched industries, and ended up at a place with a lot of people I actually enjoy being around.
You are an analyst, he is a broker. You have fundamentally divergent interpertation and incentives in this situation. A broker is compensated more when people pay more so they lie cheat and steal to get prices up. I know some that would sell the mothers kidneys to get a deal up in pricing. Also brokers tend to be pompous douchebags that think they are the most critical person in the room.
I take extreme pleasure in shitting on them constantly.
However, you need to grow a set of balls and give pushback else you are going to find people like this at every place you work who will step on your head even if it pushes you under the water to advance their own agenda.
I don't think giving pushback would have helped him at all in this situation, best to just get out.
I've worked with a lot of brokers and the majority of them treat their juniors with respect. Sounds like he just got unlucky. Next job will likely work out better.
You sound pleasant to work with from a broker’s perspective!
I am going to bet that this was Matthews Brokerage. Lol that place is such a boiler room run by egotistical nutjobs.
Got any additional info on them? One of my old classmates works there and never really got the low down on the firm.
