Drug Tests at Major Brokerages

Hi all,

I recently have received an offer for an entry level analyst position for CBRE Capital markets, and I'm super stoked. I'm curious as to the experiences of any recent hires with the onboarding process and any drug/background screenings you had for the same/similar positions. Thank you!

I was tested at JLL for an entry level analyst position but have heard that most firms are not doing it due to covid

They required a drug screen completed within 48 hours of the offer letter being signed. No notice prior. They emailed me the job offer and it was contingent on completing the drug screening. For what it’s worth, I started a new role in the middle of the pandemic at a REPE MF and was not tested. I assume that is due to covid, so it may be like that for you.

I don't work for a major brokerage, we use many of them for brokerage and prop mngt services. Our company requires drug tests before employment can begin (we are in the large corporate size category), and I am pretty sure we require similar "drug free work place" pledges by any vendor coming onsite to any our projects/properties. Thus, I would think the major brokerages have similar policies as part of compliance (note, I don't think we actually check on this, but just make a condition of our services agreement).

This has a lot to do with insurance and safety regs. Again, not sure what happens at any individual brokerage, but I'd expect it to be standard practice given the nature of the business (needs to drive/travel, visit sites, including those under construction). Even if cap markets may not do that in everyday part of business, I'd suspect a big corp like CBRE to just have one uniform policy.

CBRE will most certainly require a drug test at hiring, probably just a piss test.   they don't do random tests on existing employees though, half the company would fail.
