Ghosted by HR
Hi,
So I'm currently a senior at a target school. I had a well regarded internship this summer at a global RE investment firm. I was told I was in the process getting a return offer but at this point have been ghosted by everyone I've reached out to. Do I continue to reach out or should I just assume it's no longer an option? Has anyone experienced this and it turn out fine?
Thanks.
When you say everyone, who do you mean? Have you reached out to any of the senior people you worked with?
Also do note that we are in a recession, many firms, including mine, have reduced headcounts, especially in back office (HR/etc) roles.
Reached out to head recruiter as well as my supervisor and closest analyst. Those were all my closest relationships so unsure where to go past that.

And you didn't get anything back? Seems suspicious, have you tried calling?
We're in the middle of a pandemic. Right now companies are just focused on surviving, not expanding. You mentioned you just got done your internship this summer. I'd wait until Q1 2020 before you start assessing the situation. Things are tough out there and people are losing their jobs. We were bringing on an analyst too for our fund, we did interviews, but then our fund commitments dropped heavily and everything is on hold. We are not making a decision one way or the other. I am sure HR keeps getting calls/emails asking them whats up. Despite what WSO thinks of HR, they don't ghost people intentionally, there are higher ups above them that make the call.
makes sense and good to keep in mind. i haven't been reaching out post not hearing back since I know things are unpredictable and that there is a lot that could be happening behind the scenes and I don't want to overwhelm them or be another nuisance. just was unsure if i should be taking this silence as an answer!
Yes dont take the silence as an answer. Theres lots of headaches outside of hiring right now, don't keep emailing them, but follow up again in about 45 days.
What company
would prefer to keep this as anonymous as possible so PM me
can't pm because you are anonymous. pm me
Next time you get contacted for a role you know you wouldn't take, play the recruiter along until the last minute then ghost them. Show them how it feels.
I've done that before to a certain "real estate specific" recruiting firm in the city that is notorious for similar stories like yours
Pathetic petty lil bitch
Hah I probably ghosted your shitty company ;)
Yeah...that's a dumb idea
This is really unfortuante, but happens a lot more than ppl think.
Even outside the pandemic, a hiring manager may have the best intentions to have you come back full time but things on their side change that the applicant has no idea about. Budgets get cut, seats get cut, the hiring manager gets cut, etc...etc...
Unpopular opinion from an undergrad: if the firm is prestigious enough and we are this late in the recruiting cycle (I recognize FT is later than SA), then I wouldn't be picky and greedy here. If they were in the process of setting you up and you clicked with the people, that shows they WOULD LIKE to have you, but may not have the resources or deal flow to support your FT. In this instance, if they reach out saying they can't extend a full time offer -> I would literally counter that I would be willing to bear some burden on salary to get that FT conversion. With a 40%-70% salary cut until conditions revert, I'm not shitting you, you will retain a well known RE firm FT position where you can pad out resume, continue to make good connections, and learn through what I imagine a top development program.
Expect the worst, hope for the best. If they give the offer after a while fantastic, if not, don't expect greener grass during a downturn that doesn't really have very sexy upside prospects. College sucks and so do unpaid internships, but this is RE - the long game.
