Going back on accepting PE offer

Context: I received an offer from a PE shop I would like to work with from an opportunity perspective, but it would not be an easy move geographically / no connection to the city. All the while I am far along in a process for my top choice but still waiting on a written offer.

Since I am under a time constraint to accept the offer or not, how bad would it be to accept and potentially reject later down the line if my top choice ends up bearing fruit? Is this a relatively common occurrence in buy-side recruitment or is it very much so looked down upon?

If you don't get your top choice are you going to figure out whatever the geographical issues are?

If the answer is you aren't moving regardless, then don't accept a job just to accept a job. Tell them you concerns about location and then tell them to have a nice day, but it isn't for you.

If you are okay with making it work regardless, then it is more of a gray area whether to accept or not. If you accept and then reneg you burn the bridge with that company/team. It is a small world in RE.

I’ve been in this spot before where I had a written offer from a good job in a city I didn’t love, and had a verbal from my dream job / dream city. I passed on the 2nd choice job and waited for the written offer, although I was very anxious for a week while I waited for the written offer to come in.

If you don’t have a verbal offer, I’d accept the 2nd choice job. In this market, you can never play it too safe.

Moving to a new city and knowing no one can be an awesome experience - I’ve done it twice
