In my albeit limited interaction with him, Clyde Holland thinks he is the smartest guy in the room and he may be, but it comes off a little arrogant (there was a reason he was pushed out at TCR). Objectively, he has been incredibly successful and they build some awesome stuff. The reason I ask is that the culture varies a lot by office.

I really like the Seattle and Northern California development guys and have had great experiences with them, and anyone would be lucky to work on those teams and the projects they have underway. I'm not close to the LA guys, but folks I know like them on a personal level and my guess is that it is also a great place to be. They've got some sexy stuff going up in downtown and West Hollywood that would be pretty cool to work on, but not sure what their pipeline looks like right now. They're super well capitalized which is encouraging given where we are in the cycle so definitely worthy of your consideration.

It's a great name to have on your resume, and you'll get exposure to lots of great, complex deals, and like anything it depends on how comfortable you were with the team you met.

Not sure what your other choice is but I would be hard pressed to find a better gig than starting off at Holland. Just from a sheer experience standpoint I know they run fairly skinny, which will be a blessing and curse depending on your ability to keep up, but nonetheless you will learn a ton. Whether it's type I, III, V podium, wrap, high rise etc. they do it all and always seem to be active.

I know a few of the SoCal guys and it's a solid team. They've got probably 10 or so projects going on in LA/Long Beach right now and a few in SD as well. As mentioned they are well capitalized but more importantly Clyde, aka "Clyde the glide Holland", has been through just about every cycle in the last 30 years and always comes out ahead which can't be said for a lot of developers.

In terms of a job where you will be building your so called "toolbox" as a young CRE professional Holland will cover a vast majority. Either way congrats on the offers, Holland is a hard group to get into.

I like all of the Holland guys that I've personally ran across. They all genuinely seem nice and down to earth in person. From an experience standpoint, I've heard stories about several large omissions that they've committed in some of their projects. I think that their shop is an ideal place to start out but I would be wary of the fact that they are merchant builders. They do not retain their assets post-stabilization. If the market were to enter a recession they might not be an ideal shop to be with. Also, their limited equity reserves and their exposure to supply side risk should be a cause for some concern.

I ended up going with the other developer, which ended up offering a more senior position.

The interview process was pretty informal - it started with an in-office interview, then as a second round they invited me to tour one of their apartment developments and get lunch after. At that point I received my more senior offer from the other developer, so the process was accelerated to a decision point. I'm not sure if there would have been tests in a full process, but I didn't have to take any.

In the end, Holland expressed that they'd be willing to provide an offer, but said they couldn't match what the other developer was offering in terms of responsibility or pay. They even went so far as to praise the other group and told me to take their offer, saying it was an excellent opportunity that I shouldn't pass up. It was a great interview experience, and I really appreciated their honesty. They cared more about me making the right decision for my career than filling the role they had. They are clearly great people.

I’ve worked with one person on their Leadership team on their website.  Top notch professional and person.  The way you described your experience interviewing with them, reminds me of this person (could be like minds think similar).
