How do you guys with some experience typically apply to openings that you find online?
What is the best strategy here to supplement an online resume submission? Obviously alumni at the firm are the low hanging fruit but how do you approach them?
When I was looking for my first gig it was simple because I could play the whole “would love to learn more about your firm / industry” angle, but now that I have 2-3 years under my belt I’m less sure of the strategy here.
I was thinking of reaching out to a few alumni and saying that I wanted to supplement my application with some work samples (models / investment memos). Is this a sound approach? Would love to hear your guys’ opinions / experiences.

Find an alumnus of your school who is there now, get connected, establish a relationship and then ask for a referral. There might be an open-position document that he might be privy to that would indicate who the hiring manager is for the position (if it is actually still available). This information would be highly advantageous, especially if your new contact can establish a soft-introduction on your behalf.
Unless you have an executive summary (or similar document), I would withhold the models/investment memos for when you need to verify your credentials beyond the initial introduction. Just my two cents!
How would you approach if there are no alumni, but you also aren't looking for a job full time because you are employed.
It is kind of a split for me because obviously, I understand the industry at least a little bit because I work in it but at the same time I am not looking for a job but talking to a direct competitor.
Not sure how to come off in a good way through a cold email.
I would tread carefully if you are reaching out to direct competitors. I would advise that you used the LinkedIn function to search for previous employees of the direct competitor who have recent experience.
Are you seeking an open position or micro-level knowledge for those positions for leverage? If so, attend a local networking event for your industry and "bump" into the competitor for friendly conversation.
Struggling with this too. I think it makes sense to follow up with people who you networked with in college but make it clear you’re just looking for advice. I think resume fit matters a lot more now than interest in the position

Current situation: IBD analyst at a BB in one of its stronger groups. Need to relocate due to Visa issues and am not sure if an internal move will work (process is underway but nothing is guaranteed).
I saw an opening online at another BB in the city I am most interested in and the sector I like the most as well. I feel like I am reasonably qualified for the role given that they're looking for a BB analyst, but the only problem is that I have no point of contact other than their online posting.
So my question is, how can I get my foot in the door without having any contacts there? Cold emailing seems weird in this scenario given that I have the right background for the role, work at a well known BB and feel like there should be a more "official" channel. On the other hand I definitely want to do more than submit my resume into the black hole that online job postings are.
What else is there I can do?
It is tough, it might work in some regions if your profile is highly relevant to the posting. However, I would suggest you apply and immediately get in touch with some people in the team.
Well, but the problem is that I don't know anyone in the group / the firm.
Find their profiles, look for ANY commonality you can find with them (even something like being from the same state) and email them a quick note saying that you sent an application and you'd like to chat with someone on the team to ask some questions you have about the team.
I've done that multiple times and it usually works. Following those exact steps has gotten me to BB final rounds and is still effective. I'm still looking for something to fill in the summer before my fall role and I was able to get through to a good, relevant opportunity (not IB, but still an M&A function) by cold-emailing an alumni after applying.
