How to identify top teams in Asset Management/REPE?
No matter what side of the business you are on (be it brokerage, REPE, development, asset management, etc.), the quality of one's team is nearly everything. And working for a bad team can be a major setback to one's career.
When applying for jobs, it is easy to identify the top brokerage teams based on news articles/public information, and obviously if you're working under Jonathan Grey at Blackstone you hit the jackpot. But outside of this extremely specific example, it seems that it is substantially more difficult to identify the top teams on the REPE/Asset Management side.
Given the importance of the quality of team one works for, how do you go about assessing the quality of a team on the REPE/Asset Management side before accepting a job?
Just focus on getting a job at a good company first. In a few months, you’ll know who the best people are through observation and office gossip alone.
Then, focus on trying to work with those people either by getting on their teams, getting assigned to their deals/projects, or just having them “mentor” you.
