I feel so baited. Any advice?
So I recently posted that I got an offer from a small west coast firm that invests in distressed Real Estate.
I mentioned that they said I would get exposure to deals and the investing side of things. The one caveat was that I would try to source people to lend money to through cold calling and emailing. I had my first day today(late in the summer I know). It turns out I'm pretty much going to be a loan officer. We created our own pitch, learned about the products and kind of did mock phone calls.
The director I spoke with and networked with to get this opportunity wasn't even there. I kind of got sent off to one of his loan guys. The lending side of his business is a completely different company that he is also involved with.
Maybe I'm an idiot. Should I gtfo? I'm not really getting relevant experience. I'm just a cheap employee that can maybe get some loans in. Any advice would help. Don't hold back. Thanks guys.
Edit: the guy also asked me what my social media presence is, and we were tasked with created a call list tonight. I just feel dirty.
Do the best you can and try to find success while you continue to plot you next move.

Think the best you can do is try to excel while you are there but look for other opportunities immediately (that is, if you truly got dealt a bait n switch). Firms and recruiters understand b&s happens and it seems it's the case here.
Also, any firm that's not a social media/marketing company asking about my personal social media channels is very odd.
I'm sorry for my lack of clarification. This is a summer Internship. I'm going into my junior year of college. I thought I was getting a primarily REPE internship. I think were asking about my social media to see if I would market for them on my accounts.
Dude you’re fine… having relevant CRE experience going into your junior year will set you up great. I worked at some bullshit wealth management / insurance sales firm my sophomore summer and then went to work on Wall Street next year

Got it. Since it's an internship and you presumably have what like a month left tops? I'd say stick it out, give it your best effort, try to learn, and put it on the CV.
If you are going into your junior year, this is perfect, relevant experience. My soph summer "internship" was grounds crew at my university - you are in a good spot when it comes to junior year internships.
Sounds like it's an internship, so that changes my advice to you. It sucks and I'm sorry that happened to you. Take solace in the fact that no matter what internship you ended up with, you probably weren't doing a tremendous amount. You're going to have to make up a pitch for what you did in your internship that puts your experience in the best light possible. One other possibility is reach out to the person that connected you to the position and ask if you can shadow him or help with anything on nights and over the weekend. Basically you have 2-3 months to try and craft some experiences that you can talk about during your FT interviews. One thing you may also want to think about is trying to get an internship at a real estate company in the town of your university when you get back. That way, you'll have additional experience that you can point to.
But...your internship is not going to be the reason you do or don't get a FT offer somewhere else. It's (a) your university, (b) your major, (c) your grades, and (d) your ability to engage with people intelligently during your interviews. I interview our new analyst candidates every year and I just don't really care about internship experience outside of checking the box.
Thanks for the insight. I think the threads of people saying SA or bust made me paranoid about the opportunities that this internship would get me.
Those threads appear to be from those "seeking" jobs, not those who have "gotten" jobs. So you can relax. The funnier ones are the "will this internship piegonhole me??" Like can people really think these things with a straight face? I guess forgot the pressure of being a student, but really, these internships will have little baring on your long-term career good or bad.
Knowing what you don't like is just as important as knowing what you do like.

Stay positive and give them what they want for now. Given you had those discussions gradually try to get exposure to that side of the business. In the meantime have an eye externally and plan patiently and quietly if there is no way to fix it at your current place.
Ya it does suck being just a drone calling people. However, I think I am learning a lot about real estate, investing and I guess client facing stuff. Trying to stay positive. I can definitely spin this for another internship. Just sucks getting baited.
