Internship Experiences

Hi everyone, I figured it would be a cool idea to start an internship mega-thread.  The idea is to talk about your current or past internships, what you actually do/did on a daily basis, and how your overall experience was.  Additionally, it would be helpful to also discuss how the skills you developed applied to future internships or full-time positions.  This can be beneficial to those searching for positions in the future and give an idea of what to expect in different roles, as well as what type of role may be the best fit.  Feel free to add as much (or as little if you'd like to remain anonymous) information about the position.

I've had two prior internships, both in Canada with chartered banks (not big 5).

Internship 1: The main task was to complete annual reviews on multifamily loans.  Learned a ton about the technical aspects behind a loan such as analyzing financial statements and calculating the debt metrics, as well as how to look for potential areas of risk.  The company had an amazing culture, they provided lots of networking opportunities through social events.  However, the job did begin to feel quite competitive after the 3-month mark.

Internship 2: Pretty similar experience to job #1, however this office specialized in construction finance.  I was exposed to several different asset classes and learned a lot about development.  The technical skills I developed at my prior job gave me a huge headstart on the proforma modeling that was required in this position.  Also gained a lot of knowledge about the lending business from a high-level view.

Feel free to reply to this if you have any questions or want me to expand on anything

Still in undergrad, but I’ve had 3 internships going on 4 this summer.

First: Worked w a private credit firm doing mostly bridge loans, working alongside asset/portfolio management team. Most of the tasks were very minor due to my lack of financial knowledge as a whole. Mostly working on random projects and other small items that came up.

Second & Third: Both with Multi Value-add shops doing underwriting. No formal instructions for the most part, more of a toss you in and let you sink or swim type deal. Great experience, great way to get some reps under my belt

This summer: Very large REPE shop, assume I’ll be doing something relatively similar to my prior internships.

Coming from a non-target school (but one who does place very well), internships have been key to getting any traction in the industry. Fortunate that there have been many opportunities to jump on throughout my time in undergrad.
