Is learning and getting certified in ARGUS worth it for an aspiring commercial appraiser?

Hi All,

I have seen that a number of commercial appraisal entry-level or mid-level positions which hire people with maybe 1-2 year's worth of experience often indicate that proficiency in ARGUS is desired as a qualification.

I am at the start of my journey into commercial appraisal, and am still looking for an opening and path into this career - either through a national firm that provides internal training and path to certification, or through a small firm or single proprietor who may take me on as a trainee. (If I don't secure a commercial trainee position, my eventual path may take me first to Residential Appraisal Certification since I already have a residential mentor, while continuing my effort to enter or transition to commercial appraisal).

This brings me to my question: Would it be helpful for me, at this stage, to also enroll in a class on ARGUS software at a university extension school, or to obtain a certification in ARGUS from an online program that provides classes in this software?

I would be eager to do this if I can leverage knowledge and certification in ARGUS to show potential mentors or employers that I have been developing hard skills that I can bring directly to a commercial trainee position.

Appreciate your advice.

I would say that in your position, getting the AE certification might be worth it as it demonstrates a legitimate interest in the industry and even more importantly, it will help you convey your story in interviews. With that said, everything I know about AE was learned on the job and in speaking with friends who got the certification it does not sound like the skills are very transferable. I would say the same for taking a class on it. I took one while I was in college and although parts of it are useful, I honestly believe you could become competent enough with it by playing with different inputs and reports for a couple of hours on the weekend before you start working. You waste time using things like the valuation tab and the debt tab in classes which I have personally never used while working.
