Lunch Interview - Advice

Hey guys,

I had a call that I networked to get and after the call the guy(who's in charge of hiring for the office) asked to meet for lunch for an hour to discuss in more detail. I'm 1-2 years out of college, so still young and not experienced with this.

What should I do to prepare? Know the company, person, my deals? I'm obviously dressing up in suit and tie and this seems like a good sign that our convo went well & he wants to meet.

This is maybe for a position, he openly said it may be tough at my level of experience to join at this time and I just have no clue what to expect, I know with ordering food to not get anything too heavy or expensive. Offer to split it, but he'll probably pick it up.

If someone invites you out to lunch, it’s probably going to be less “walk me through this deal you worked on” and more just figuring out if you’re a likeable person who can have lunch with someone without being awkward or nervous.

Just focus on having a good, normal conversation. Ask about work stuff, his career, etc. If he ventures into personal stuff / non work related stuff then it’s safe for you to ask those questions too

I had one of these lunch interviews. Would defo focus on the soft side of things (being an interesting person, interact in a mature and natural way etc.). In my case, after the first 15mins of having a general discussion they then slowly made it more specific about my interest/level of knowledge on their business. Had zero experience back then and they asked me about WACC in their industry - ballpark estimates on Cost of equity/debt and reasoning - DCF walkthrough and overall understanding of CorpFin. Was invited to proper interviews in the office after that so this is definitely a chance you should grab.
