M&A to REIB/REPE/Acquisitions/Development

Interesting opportunity presented itself with a small/boutique M&A firm. They do have real estate listed as an industry, but it does not seem to be a major part of their transaction history, nor is it guaranteed I would work on those deals.

I've been focusing on the RE side of things: REIB/REPE/Acquisitions/Development etc.

Let's just say I went with this and my industry experience was not related to real estate. How likely would it be to transfer the experience to a RE firm? Has anyone made this jump?

A jump I could possibly see is: work in this role for 1-2 yrs. --> HFF M&A --> RE firm. However, I feel that's a pretty specific path and might not be feasible. The modeling would be different, but I'm wondering if the exposure to transactions/front office experience would be enough.
