Managing PR

Does anyone here manage PR for their real estate shop? I run a very small development company comprised of two people, and am also responsible for managing all of our social media, press inquiries, etc. Outside of LinkedIn, I'm wondering if anyone has tips for how to gain more press traction in terms of getting attention from commercial observer, bisnow, globe street, etc. Do people just typically reach out to the press reps at those groups to make them aware there is a potential story? How does that work? To be clear, I don't want to spend money hiring a publicist or PR person.

My company is purposefully bad at it, preferring to stay out of the news, but partners we have worked with who are far more press savvy do exactly what you say - reach out to the writers and reps at the publications, take them out to lunch, and create relationships with them.
