Military Reserves and Real Estate

Hey everyone,

I'm a military vet that's just about to finish an MBA program and am looking to transition into a real estate development role. Over the last few weeks I've also started to consider rejoining the reserves in my old career field (engineering/construction, so tangentially related to development).

Has anyone seen someone successfully juggle a career in real estate development (or acquisitions) while serving in the reserves? I think it may be possible at an entry or mid-level but am thinking it may impose a pretty strong glass ceiling on advancement, particularly as a lot of development shops run very lean. I'd love to see if anyone has seen this done - anecdotally most of the reservists I worked with while I was active migrated to working for some sort of Government, although things have slowed down quite a bit from the height of GWOT when people were being mobilized every few years.

Thanks!

Hello - I tried searching the subreddit to see if there were previous topics but didn’t find much.

Are there any agents that fit the title? If so; what was your experience like? Are there anythings you wish you knew or would do differently?

I’ve been licensed since 2018 but worked at a brokerage that also did management and was primarily a property manager, although I was able to do leasing and a handful of sales.

I plan to transition to brokerage full time this year. I am not currently in the NG but will be signing a contract at the end of the week.

Some things that immediately come to mind would be planning ahead of time, trying not to schedule anything when when you have drill or AT. In the event of extended absences (deployments), I’d imagine to try to plan ahead and collaborate with another agent for coverage, Etc.

My brokerage is a smaller boutique office with a handful of agents. The office specializes in mostly investment properties. The top agents put in 60+ hour weeks and I plan to do the same.

Any anecdotes would be greatly appreciated.

i got this...

Separating this fall and looking at this path (acquisitions). My designator has never had to involuntarily mobilize though, so not a big risk on that front.
