MSRE as a Canadian?
Any Canadians in real estate who’ve done / considered doing a MSRE in the US? I’m currently an analyst in Toronto with ~2 YOE - considering doing a MSRE down the line to get my foot in the door in the US, so just wanted to get some thoughts.
I know people typically say that an MSRE isn’t worth it, but wondering if that perspective is different for us Canadians as getting to the US is difficult, especially with recent TN scrutiny. Additionally, are there specific MSREs that actually have STEM designation? I’ve heard that STEM degrees can get up to 36 months of OPT status (vs 12 normally). Thanks in advance.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing an MSRE as a Canadian could be a strategic move if your primary goal is to break into the U.S. real estate market. Here are some key considerations:
MSRE Value for Canadians: While MSRE programs often receive mixed reviews regarding their ROI, the perspective might differ for Canadians due to the challenges of entering the U.S. job market. An MSRE from a reputable U.S. institution could provide networking opportunities, industry exposure, and potentially ease the transition into the U.S. real estate sector.
STEM Designation: Some MSRE programs in the U.S. do have STEM designations, which can be a significant advantage for international students. A STEM-designated degree allows for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) status, compared to the standard 12 months. This extended period can provide more time to secure sponsorship or a long-term role in the U.S.
Program Selection: If you're considering an MSRE, research programs that are well-regarded in the U.S. real estate industry and offer strong alumni networks. Additionally, prioritize programs with STEM designation if your goal is to maximize your OPT duration.
Cost vs. Benefit: Evaluate the financial investment of an MSRE against your career goals. Programs like Georgetown's MSRE ($50k) or alternatives like the ACRE Accelerator ($1k) have been discussed extensively on WSO. If your primary goal is knowledge and networking, the ACRE Accelerator might be a cost-effective option. However, for visa and U.S. market entry purposes, a formal MSRE might hold more weight.
TN Visa Challenges: With recent scrutiny on TN visas, having a U.S.-based degree could strengthen your case for employment in the U.S. real estate market. Employers may also view a U.S. degree as a sign of commitment to the local industry.
In summary, pursuing an MSRE as a Canadian could be worth it if it aligns with your long-term career goals in the U.S. real estate market. Focus on programs with strong reputations, STEM designations, and robust alumni networks to maximize your investment.
