MSREI Pre-MBA Associate (NYC)

Curious if anyone has any thoughts / insights on MSREI NYC group? I know they have a smaller office in LA, is staffing similar just separated by geographies? General culture, hours, etc would be much appreciated, as well as any insight into the general interview process or any additional information worth mentioning!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing (MSREI):

  1. Geographic Separation: MSREI has offices in NYC and LA, with staffing generally separated by geography. The NYC group is likely the larger and more prominent office, given its location in a major financial hub.

  2. Culture and Hours: While specific details about the NYC group’s culture and hours aren’t explicitly mentioned, real estate investing roles at top firms like MSREI typically involve long hours, especially during deal cycles. The culture can vary by team, but expect a high-performance environment with a focus on real estate investment strategies.

  3. Interview Process: Insights from WSO threads suggest that preparation for MSREI interviews should include:

    • Technical Knowledge: Be ready to discuss real estate fundamentals, including cap rates, valuation methods, LTV, DSCR, and market trends.
    • Behavioral Questions: Prepare to articulate your interest in real estate investing, your career goals, and how your background aligns with MSREI’s focus.
    • Market Insights: Be prepared to share your views on the current CRE market, including sectors you are bullish or bearish on, and support your opinions with data or reasoning.
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Networking with alumni or professionals in the MSREI group can provide valuable insights and potentially help with interview preparation.
    • Familiarize yourself with Morgan Stanley’s broader real estate strategy and recent deals to demonstrate your knowledge during interviews.

If you’re targeting this role, focus on sharpening your technical skills and market knowledge while also preparing for behavioral and fit questions. Good luck!

Great culture. Generally hear that juniors stay for an extended period of their careers given the comradery and environment.

Interviewed with the team and felt pretty good about the basic behavioral and technical questions but ended up botching the model. Build from scratch with 3 tier waterfall and answer Q&A. Felt solid about it but didn't 100% ace it.
