(Networking) Good questions to ask?
I've got a few phone calls lined up with some guys in Capital market groups at some top brokerages. I'm trying really hard to land to couple interviews and so I definitely want to come off sounding as intelligent as possible. What might be some good questions to ask about their jobs?
Similarly, I have a phone call scheduled for a principal at a boutique development firm. I know less about development but am still pretty interested. Could use advice on good questions to ask here as well.
Finally, I am also working my ass off to at least try and get an interview at a REPE firm. These guys are a lot more difficult to get in touch with, and I certainly don't want to waste their time when I do. I imagine some good questions to are not completely out of the scope of what I would be asking people in positions referred above, but any advice or insight would be helpful here as well.
Side note, this is my first time posting on this forum and I have no idea how to edit that "Networkig" tag. Not even with all my experience on Reddit can I figure this one out.
Best thing to do is read non-stop. Using the search function on the forum is good to figure out how developers differ from PE, brokerage, lending etc. Then use google to find out about deals he’s done, use bisnow to find out what’s going on in the markets he invests in. Show that you have a genuine interest by putting in some leg work and reading.
Also I think senior people like to talk big picture and give career advice, so maybe ask some questions along those lines like “which entry level roles allow you to learn the most at the start of your career”
I'm in the same boat as you. I just started networking for CRE and had 3-4 calls in the last two weeks. I had a few questions pre selected to ask before the call, but I rarely went to them. Each conversation will be different and you need to feel it out when you're on the phone. Some guys straight up tell you advice without you asking. Others will go straight to the point and say were not hiring, but they will mention firms and other people to contact. Since you are looking for an internship I would always ask do you know of any firms or contacts that are hiring. I've also learnt that most of the people you will be talking to are brokers and they love it when you stroke their ego.
